About the Swedish Australian Chamber of Commerce

The first known Swede to visit Australia was Daniel Solander, botanist, who sailed into Botany Bay together with Captain Cook. By the end of the 1800's trade was already well established between Sweden and Australia. Among others, the first Ericsson telephone handsets were in use, Gustaf de Laval's cream separator had been introduced in the dairy industry and Transatlantic Shipping Co had begun a regular shipping service between Sweden and Australia.

The Swedish Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1911 in Sydney. Today, the Chamber is a modern, membership funded, networking organisation with around 180 members, both large and small. The Chamber provides a platform for the social interaction between Swedish and Australian business interests in Australia. A close relationship exists between the Chamber, the Swedish Consulates, the Swedish Embassy and also the Swedish Trade Council in Sydney, where the administration office is located.

In 2004, the Chamber established a Young Professionals division, with the aim of attracting young members through offering a number of activities targeted to this group. These activities are offered in addition to the Chambers regular activities. Young Professionals has a steering group consisting of eight members.

The Chamber's Council, which consists of 19 elected and honorary members, meets on a regular basis and The Ambassador of Sweden to Australia is an active member together with representatives from major Swedish companies established in Australia.

Our office is located in Sydney and the members are spread throughout Australia. A variety of activities are organised on a regular basis. Highlights during the year include presentation nights, Christmas festivities and Yabbie Parties in Melbourne and Sydney and our casual monthly get-togethers. The popular Oaks Hotel get-togethers as well as the Young Professionals After Work drinks will continue throughout the year. As a Member you are welcome to attend all the Chamber's events, make use of its well-established network of contacts and to market your company through the Chamber. Have a look at our Events page for an up to date list of coming functions. Also, invitations are sent out via email.

We welcome new members, both companies, individuals and young professionals. Please download an application form at the Become a member folder.
